The small west Texas town of Odessa, TX has plenty of local campgrounds where guests can access great recreational opportunities, such as sand sledding, biking, or hiking. 1. Monahan’s Sandhills
Monahan’s Sandhills, located to the west of Odessa, is an unusual example of a sand-sea, one of the few such geographical features in Texas. You can explore the dunes on foot or even by horse. You can explore anywhere you like as the park does not have marked trails.
Be aware that the dunes can get very hot during the summer months, so be careful not to burn yourself. The park includes a campground with 26 developed campsites, all of which have running water, electricity, and a shade shelter where you can get out of the midday heat.
2. Balmorhea State Park
This state park is home to the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool, with cool waters where you can dive in and get out of the scorching sun at this desert oasis. It’s also a great place to learn about the unique natural environment of the area, with plenty of opportunities to explore the park on foot or birdwatch.
The campsites all have electricity and running water, and some even have access to cable TV. All can be reserved online through the park website.
3. San Angelo State Park
Situated on the banks of the O.C Fisher Reservoir and the Concho River, San Angelo State Park is a great place to learn about Texas’s history and nature. The historic Fort Concho can be visited nearby, and over 50 miles of multi-use trail wind their way through the park. Anglers can try their luck on the reservoir and river, and you can even rent fishing gear.
Campsites range from fully developed RV sites with electricity and water to primitive backpackers tent sites, some of which are walk-in. It is also possible to rent one of the several log cabins in the park, or space in the bunkhouse.
4. Lake Colorado City Campgrounds
This small park is not, as the name suggests, an urban one, and instead offers a peaceful natural experience by the water’s edge. Fishing, swimming, and paddling are some of the most popular activities on the lake, but hiking, geocaching, and picnicking are also great things to do.
The park’s campsites, of which there are over 100, all have water and electricity available. Reservations can easily be made online via the park’s website.
