McKinney Park Sprayground

Since its opening in 2008, McKinney Park Sprayground has been a favorite space for local kids. The free park features cascading water features and a variety of water sprays, allowing families to enjoy a respite from the Texas heat.

McKinney Park Sprayground also features two shade umbrellas and a picnic pavilion, the latter of which can be rented for $15 for three hours. In addition to the Sprayground itself, the park features recreational green space and sports courts, giving families a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Floyd Gwin Park

The 52-acre Floyd Gwin Park is a popular spot for Odessa families because it’s where the local Little League teams play. In addition to baseball, the park boasts a picnic pavilion, a children’s playground, and an outdoor public pool. There’s plenty of green space for outdoor games like frisbee and kite-flying, not to mention the facilities available for playing basketball, soccer, and volleyball.

With so much wide-open space, Floyd Gwin Park is a great place to walk your dog and let them run around. While there aren’t any water fountains on-site, the facility does feature restrooms.

Progressive Park

If you have smaller kids under age four or kids with special needs, Progressive Park is the perfect destination for some outdoor activity. The park was designed for and dedicated to children with special needs, ensuring the entire site is accessible for wheelchairs and that features like the swings have secure and comfortable chairs. You’ll even find swings for wheelchair users.

Progressive Park offers a center pavilion and plenty of benches and shade trees. It’s a great urban space with colorful equipment that little ones will love.

Central Bark Dog Park

When your furbaby needs to run off some excess energy, head to Central Bark Dog Park at Slator Park. Odessa’s first dog park features two fenced areas for off-leash access, a separation area, and a picnic pavilion. Best of all, it’s free to the public.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules before entering the dog park. Don’t open the outer gate if the inner gate is open and remove your dog’s leash inside the off-leash area, not inside the double-gated area. Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations, have their collars and tags on at all times, and must be older than four months old. Food or treats are prohibited inside the off-leash area, and owners must clean up after their dogs using the provided waste disposal containers. Balls, frisbees, and other toys are encouraged — just be prepared to share with other pups.

With so many great outdoor spaces throughout Odessa, kids, pets, and adults can enjoy plenty of recreational opportunities without having to drive far. Have you visited one of Odessa’s city parks lately? Which one is your all-time favorite?
