Fishing near Odessa, TX

Within the borders of the great state of Texas, there is only one natural lake. One might think that makes fishing here nothing but a dream, but don’t fear- this state is home to 36 rivers and more than 6,700 man-made lakes, reservoirs, and wells where anglers can still get their freshwater fishing fix. Odessa, TX is no different, with dozens of fishing spots to choose from.

1. Bull Well

Located near West Odessa, anglers will find Largemouth and Spotted bass, as well as Channel and Blue catfish. This locale offers bank, pier, and dock fishing, so there are plenty of spots to choose from. Anglers like this spot for its peacefulness, large catches, and boat access. Just off the 301, it’s an easy place to get to so you can relax while dropping a line.

2. Comanche Trail Pond

This pond is located on the south end of Comanche Trail Park and was established with the goal of creating a place where Odessa residents can learn to fish and improve their quality of life. The pond is stocked four times a year with rainbow trout and hosts their annual “Take Me Fishing Kids Angler Education Event” where kids of all ages can learn safety and how to be a responsible angler.

3. Averitt Number 2 Lake

Anglers can find this 21-acre reservoir just inside the SE Loop 338. This spot has plenty of species of fish, including varieties of trout, catfish, bass, carp, bluegill, and bullhead. This is a bank-only fishing spot with a picnic area, so anglers can enjoy a fun fishing day with friends or family.

4. South Well

Anglers won’t have to travel far to access this “South” well, as it is situated in the northeast part of the city, right off the NE Loop 338. The top species to catch here are the standard for the area- bass, carp, bluegill, and trout with the occasional pumpkinseed. Despite this, the catches that anglers report are quite large.

5. Horse Well

This well is located almost exactly halfway between Odessa and Midland; it’s also another put and take locale. There’s bank fishing and boat ramps with picnic areas and parking, so bring the family; like South Well, anglers have reported catches on the larger end of the scale here.

6. Prairie Dog Lake

Just 8.4 miles Norwest of Odessa, this lake is neighbor to a few others including Plover, Northwest, and Coyote Lake. Anglers can find varieties common to the waterways and stocked ponds in the area but will mostly snag Channel catfish. There’s not much in the way of direct road access, so anglers will enjoy the serenity that this little area has to offer.

Whether you’re new to fishing, enjoy spending a day of quiet angling and reflection, or are looking to spend the day with family and friends, these spots won’t disappoint.
